I know Him whom I have trusted

"But I am still full of confidence, because I know whom I have trusted, and I am sure that he is able to keep safe until that Day what he has entrusted to me." (2 Timothy 1:12)

This morning, I went to the Home for the Elderly to have worship with the people there as usual. I was so very touched when I took an old lady to the cross at the altar and saw her starting to use her hands to 'draw the cross' against her chest and then put her hand into a praying gesture. Why was I so touched? Well, this old lady is both deaf and dumb, she came to believe in God a few years ago and got baptised and attended our Church service in the Home for the Elderly every Sunday. However, in the past year, her mental health deteriorated a lot, she suffered from dementia, always roaming round the corridor, not recognising people, and she could not communicate with people. Yet, on Sunday morning, somehow, she would walk into our little room for the Service, sitting there for a while and then wandering away, though sometimes she could manage to sit for the whole Service. The touching thing is that though people may look at her to have lost her rational mind, what I can see clearly is that Jesus is still inside her heart. She may have lost her knowledge, understanding and even her memories, yet she KNOWS HIM whom the she has TRUSTED. She still knows Jesus and prays to Jesus in front of the cross. This is so very amazing!

This is similar to the case of my father-in-law who also suffered from dementia, though at the latest stage of his life when he almost had forgotten who we are, he still remembered how to say the Lord's Prayer. The words of the Lord were imprinted in his heart, though his 'mind' was already not functioning that well.

The touching scene reassured me of the love and greatness of God, He was, is and will be with us forever, despite our degeneration, which is part of life that everyone of us will go through. In Him, there is hope, love and joy. The touching scene also gave me an even greater urge to spread the Good News so that everyone can trust in Jesus and have Him in their heart, such that whatever state they are in in their life, they will know that Jesus is always with them and that there is nothing to fear.

Dear Lord, please bless all who are ageing, may they come to know you and entrust their life to you so that they can forever be in your love. Please also help us all to have the passion to spread the Good News to those around us, young or old, so that they too can know You and put their trust in You. Amen.
